Music from the Emerald Isle
Irish traditional music originated more than a thousand years ago
at the time of the Celts, an ancient and proud people who lived in
what is now the British Isles.  Music and song are still an integral
part of the culture of Ireland and are a source of pride for the
Irish people.  Irish traditional music today is not  confined only to
Ireland.  Musicians throughout the world play and sing Irish
music,  constantly adding to the rich tradition.  Here in Israel this
music has become an integral part of the local music scene,
attracting a growing audience of all ages and ethnic
backgrounds.
“Music from the Emerald Isle” is an evening of Irish songs,
melodies, and stories, performed by Bracha Ben-Avraham, a
prominent member of Israel’s  Irish folk music scene.  Born in the
U.S., Bracha has played and sung folk music all her life, and her
interest in Irish music and song began more than ten years ago.
She then traveled to Ireland, where she became deeply
immersed in the music, instruments, and tradition.  Since then
she has dedicated all of her musical activities to learning and
performing Irish music and song.   She was a member of the
popular Israeli band “Irish Cream” in which she played bouzouki.
She now performs with her new band,  “Emerald”, where she is
the arranger, singer, and bouzouki player.
In this solo program, Bracha presents original renditions of
traditional Irish songs in English and Gaelic, using authentic Irish
instruments such as the Irish bouzouki, tin whistle, and bodhran.
She offers the audience explanations of the songs, instruments,
and the rich tradition of Irish music.
